Technical reports often present complex information to non-specialists.  Their effectiveness depends as much on the quality of the writer’s ideas as on the accuracy of their information.  An effective technical report displays complicated information in ways that make it easy to understand, and – above all – relevant to the reader.

Technical people, managers and executives often need to write high-quality reports to readers who are non-technical. Effective technical writing is now a critical component of clear and concise communication and it takes time and skill to communicate specialist information. Skill in report writing is necessary to reduce the time it takes to write a report that gets results. In this course, you will learn how to incorporate text, data, drawings and charts into your report writing following a few basic rules of communication for a clearer and more effective report.

This course covers detailed aspects of how to compile and write a technical report. The suggestions presented in the course may be employed, whether you are writing a single page report, or a multi-volume research study. Technical reports do, or at least should, have a clear purpose and an identifiable audience. This course will give you a systematic and easy to understand approach to technical reports, and also help you choose the correct graphics, layout, and presentation style. It will help the candidates get their technical information across clearly, concisely, correctly and completely. This course is designed to reinforce the main ideas needed to produce reports which can be read, and used, by a wide audience. This course includes useful tips, tricks and techniques for improving your writing skills. The candidates will learn how to:

  • Write more efficiently
  • Understand the functions of different kinds of technical reports, especially evaluations and proposals
  • Adapt and focus the writing on the needs of the target audience
  • Organize material effectively to support explanations and arguments
  • Create effective summaries and introductions – and clearly understand the difference between the two
  • Improve your style on three levels: paragraph, sentence, word
  • Make your reports easier to navigate
