WiMAX Technology Overview

Introduction

WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a wireless communications standard designed to provide 30 to 40 megabit-per-second data rates, with the 2011 update providing up to 1 Gbit/s for fixed stations. The name WiMAX was created by the WiMAX Forum, which was formed in June 2001 to promote conformity and interoperability of the standard. The forum describes WiMAX as a standards-based technology enabling the delivery of last mile wireless broadband access as an alternative to cable and DSL.

This course is aimed at technical audience involved in the design and deployment of WiMAX networks, equipment, or software. The candidates will learn, at a high level, what WiMAX is and does. They will gain an understanding of the performance parameters of WiMAX and why WiMAX is not Wi-Fi. We will address the major objections to WiMAX including the issues of security, Quality of Service (QoS), and interference mitigation. Once it is understood why WiMAX is a viable alternative to the wireline technologies, we will discuss where WiMAX is a cost-effective alternative to traditional Telco technologies (DSL and T1). Finally, we will take a look at WiMAX existing telecommunications options and where the adoption of WiMAX can save money in the near term.

In a nutshell, this course introduces both technical aspects of WiMAX and 802.16 technologies. It enables the candidates to fully understand how WiMAX technology fits into the 4G wireless communications. WiMAX enables mobile broadband built as an advanced, efficient wireless technology. Learn about WiMAX RF and core background such as OFDM, MIMO, flat IP architecture, RF and core engineering specifically for WiMAX network design.

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, delegates will be able to:

· Understand the basic concepts of 802.16-2004

· Understand the basic concepts of 802.16e

· Understand 802.16e Protocols (PHY, MAC)

· Understand OFDMA and SOFDMA Techniques

· Understand the technical implementation 802.16e

· Understand 802.16e RF concepts and issues

· Gain a general understanding of 802.16e systems planning, coverage and capacity

· Be able to select the most effective WiMAX type from a wide assortment of recent and emerging implementations

· Be able to perform a more efficient design and operational support of 802.16e implementation of WiMAX

Who Should Attend?

Technical staff responsible for WiMAX network (Planning, Design, Operation, Testing, Support & Troubleshooting), Technical staff responsible for implementing and supporting WiMAX networks and other wireless networks, including Design engineers, Field engineers, Test engineers & Software and hardware developers & Line maintenance staff
