Fire Prevention, Protection & Safety on Power Plants

Introduction:

Power plants have special fire protection issues: few people on duty, limited numbers of response agencies, and few fixed systems. Further, because of the increasingly competitive nature of the Electric Power Generation market, reduced plant staffing and stricter OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) requirements for employee fire fighting capabilities, employees of the power generating stations need to place increased emphasis on fire protection systems and fire fighting techniques in order to minimize the impacts and consequences of fires, which can damage critical equipment and reduce availability and reliability of power supplies.

This course is designed to provide utility operating personnel, power plant designers, and other interested parties with a basic understanding of the concepts, hardware and functions of fire protection as they apply to the electric power generating industry. This understanding is the starting point for providing and maintaining appropriate fire protection for power plants.

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course delegates will be able to:

Understand the importance of safety in the workplace with special emphasis on Power plants. It presents the majority of the latest aspects in Risk Management and Accident Investigation. The course highlights how to identify safety training needs. Near miss, incident and accident reporting is handled to show how these statistics can help to prevent losses to the power company and its employees.
